The Chautauqua Lake Watershed Management Plan was completed in 2010. A key recommendation of this plan was to develop a strategy to manage nuisance aquatic vegetation in Chautauqua Lake. To that end, an ambitious effort to develop a Macrophyte Management Strategy (MMS) is currently underway by a dedicated group of member organizations, professional consultants, and a dedicated group of stakeholders under the direction of the County Planning Department. The MMS assesses unique challenges facing the lake, identifies a range of macrophyte management options that can serve various human needs while supporting a healthy ecosystem for the benefit of the watershed. The result is a balanced, holistic strategy that will work for the Chautauqua Lake community into the future, by developing an integrated, zoned implementation program to manage aquatic vegetation that preserves and enhances lake uses while protecting environmentally critical areas.
