Fiscal Sponsorship 101

Watershed work relies on collaboration and partnerships. We get many questions from watershed groups about partnering with other organizations or entities, for fiscal sponsorship, fiscally-sponsored projects, or grants. Kelly Mathews from the New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc. (NYCON) will share what fiscal sponsorship is, the roles and responsibilities of a fiscal sponsor vs. a sponsored project, and considerations for applying for 501c3 tax exemption. Kelly will describe fiscal sponsorship models and the role a fiscal sponsor can play for emerging organizations. We’ll also hear the rationale for applying for 501c3 Tax Exempt status and the responsibilities that come with receiving it vs. working with a Fiscal Sponsor. Kelly Mathews has served nonprofit organizations for 27 years. Since 1998, she has led NYCON’s Financial Management Group, providing financial management technical assistance and training to nonprofit staff and boards of directors throughout New York State, both directly and via partnerships with New York State agencies and foundations. She also serves as NYCON’s Chief Operating Officer, providing leadership on NYCON’s organization-wide initiatives, public policy and infrastructure.
